Continuing the Extension series for the Lumi application, I would like to introduce the new Metronome for those of you learning music, playing instruments, and singing.
🎯 Why I Made It
When practicing an instrument, a metronome is needed, but every time I practice, I have to open a metronome webpage, adjust the tempo, rhythm, and sound from scratch, and some pages even have ads. The Metronome remembers your previous settings, and allows you to save them as presets so you can just click once to have everything back.
🥁 Main Features
- Tempo from 20 to 300 BPM: click − and + (hold ⇧ to jump by 10), drag the slider, use the arrow keys, double-click the number to type directly, or tap the T key according to the music to let the Metronome calculate the tempo automatically.
- Time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 12/8, or custom time signatures up to 16 beats, using whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, or eighth notes.
- Divide each beat into 2, 3 (triplet) or 4 sounds.
- Emphasize the first beat of each bar. In the Beat Pads interface, click on each beat to emphasize or silence it.
- 8 tapping sounds: Click, Woodblock, Beep, Wind-up, Cowbell, Hi-hat, Sticks, Clave, with adjustable volume.
- Preset: click + to save the current settings, next time you can just click to retrieve tempo, time signature, and sound. Name, replace, or delete presets - mistakes can be undone.
- 4 interfaces: Classic mimics a pendulum metronome like those placed on piano lids, pull the weight to change tempo. Orbit is a circle with a hand that moves according to the beat, rotate it to change tempo. Beat Pads has each beat represented as a box that lights up when the beat comes. Simple features neat lines of settings.
👤 Who It's For
- For me: first and foremost to solve my own problem 😉
- For you: if you're also learning Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, or Drums, the app is very useful for practicing rhythm exercises.
- For everyone: Those who sing and need to count beats evenly, or those who are self-taught in music and don't have a suitable metronome tool.
📥 How to Install (only works on macOS, other platforms can use the web version at https://metronome.lumikeys.app)
- Download and install Lumi (version 1.64.0 or higher) at https://lumikeys.app
- Click the Lumi icon in the menu bar, open Settings, go to Extensions, find Metronome in the Extension Store and install it. Or open https://lumikeys.app/extensions/dev.thiennguyen.metronome/ and click Install.
- Open the Metronome tab, press Space to start, press Space again to stop.
✨ Key Differences
- No ads, no account needed, no internet required, no permissions requested on your machine. Everything is stored on your Mac.
- The Preset feature saves your tempo, sound, and volume settings so that when reopened you can continue practicing.
- Everything can be done using the keyboard: Space to start or stop, arrow keys to change tempo, T to tap tempo.
- When Reduce Motion is enabled, the pendulum and hand stay still, and beats are displayed only with lights.
🧩 The Metronome is an extension in the Lumi store: install an app, and then add tools as needed. Check out other extensions at https://lumikeys.app/extensions/
A responsive web version for all types of devices is available to use immediately without needing to install Lumi
