I am currently working at a Chinese company. In the process of learning and using Chinese, and previously English or other foreign languages, vocabulary practice is one of the key factors determining a person's language proficiency in work and life.
Previously, I often learned using the writing mode of Quizlet, and for someone who is lazy and wants to fast-track their progress, this was quite a suitable method and has a greater chance of long-term retention compared to simply learning with flashcards (the muscle memory factor due to repeated input). However, later on, Quizlet started requiring payment for some quite basic learning features. I tried to find a few alternative tools, but I haven't come across any product that fits my preferred learning method.
Therefore, I decided to build my own MindFocus – a vocabulary learning platform focused on active recall, writing practice, and turning personal word lists into clearly structured learning modules.
Some current features of MindFocus:
• Create your own vocabulary modules or take shared modules from the community. (Since there are currently no user contributions, I have built many sample modules based on the materials I received from the center and the teachers who have been teaching me about their most valued vocabulary resources, complete with context and accompanying pronunciation)
• Support various learning modes with gradually increasing difficulty, from recognition to typing in answers (I found an article discussing the ability to organize for short-term memory, and I transformed it into the core algorithm for organizing words while maintaining randomness)
• Support uploading modules in .xlxs or .csv format instead of having to type each word on the website. (I chose the website as it provides the best typing experience on keyboard-supported devices).
• Track progress, number of words remembered, and those frequently answered incorrectly.
• Allow copying, editing, and personalizing others' modules.
• Share modules with the community completely free of charge. (Support the feature of creating modules specifically for teacher groups, so students can participate even without logging in, while teachers still receive reports and statistic scoreboards)
• Have an MFP point system to recognize the learning process and completion of modules.
My goal is not to create another version of Quizlet, but to build a simple, practical vocabulary learning tool that is more suitable for those who want to create their own learning content. In the long run, I want to develop MindFocus into an ecosystem where users can not only learn for free but also be recognized and rewarded for valuable contributions to the community. With the current deployment being MFP and future development following a Learn-To-Earn model, each MFP will be exchanged at a 1:1 ratio (The implementation aimed at blockchain will also depend on my future capabilities).
I am developing Mindfocus as a semi-professional developer, without formal training in IT, so I hope everyone will provide gentle feedback and straightforward suggestions regarding the learning experience, missing features, and security, so that I can complete the project and provide the best product for the community. Once again, I sincerely thank you.
