Hello, it's me again,
Continuing the extension series for Lumi, this time I introduce Floating Browser: a small browser that always stays on top of other windows on Mac. Documentation beside the code editor, recipe on the notes page, a small video in the corner of the screen while you work.
🎯 Why I built Floating Browser
When working and needing to quickly view documentation, look up a word, or open a video to listen to, I often have to switch back and forth between the browser and the app I'm using. Clicking on the app causes the browser window to be obscured, splitting the screen can make either side cramped. The browser's Picture in Picture only highlights the video, without allowing clicks on the pages or typing addresses.
✨ Main features
- Always on top: floats above the app you are using, following you across all desktops and stays above full-screen apps. Press ⌃⌥⌘H to show or hide it, the tab remains unchanged. The window appears without taking the keyboard focus from the app you’re typing in.
- Tabs like Chrome: max 4 tabs, the address bar can take both search keywords, the new tab has a search box and shortcuts you set. ⌘⇧T reopens the last closed tab, ⌘+ and ⌘− zoom in and out on each page and are remembered for next time.
- Mobile or desktop version for each page: the narrow window thus opens the mobile version, while YouTube opens the desktop version. Switching a page to the other version means the next time it opens like that.
- Compact Mode: consolidates tabs and the toolbar into a thin bar to provide more space for the webpage.
- Minimized while music continues to play: press ⌃⌥⌘B to minimize the browser into a mini frame in the bottom corner of the window, displaying cover art, song title and artist, pause, play, and scrub right there. Clicking on the mini frame brings the browser back exactly to that spot, even on a different screen. If you lose the mini frame, press ⌃⌥⌘P to make the mini frame shake.
- Custom icon in the menu bar: Now Playing sits at the top with cover art, time, stop button, and scrubber, below are the tabs, Compact Mode, and Mute All.
- History (⌘Y) and Settings (⌘,): light or dark interface or according to system preference, cover art style on the mini frame (turntable spinning, round, square), and Visualizer for the three bars on the mini frame bouncing to the music.
🔐 Required extension permissions
- Network, to open web pages. Lumi only opens pages via https, the extension does not see the contents of the page, only knows the address and title.
- Icon and menu on the menu bar, the menu is preloaded when Lumi starts to appear immediately when clicked.
- Volume control, only when you enable Visualizer (default off), and only for the sound of pages in Floating Browser, not for other apps.
The page remembers logins across sessions but is kept separate from your main browser. Tabs, history, and shortcuts are all saved on the Mac.
👤 Who it's for
- Coders opening documentation, Stack Overflow right beside the code editor.
- Online learners, watching lectures while taking notes.
- Writers, translators: copy a word, open a new tab, paste it right beside.
- Those who frequently play music or podcasts on YouTube while working without wanting a large browser window blocking the screen.
